CETaqua integrates, manages and executes research projects aimed at proposing innovative solutions to companies, society and the administrations to solve environmental and technological problems linked to management of the complete water cycle. The founding partners of CETaqua are: Aguas de Barcelona (AGBAR), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The main objective of CETaqua is to contribute to research and development of technologies related to the complete water cycle, promoting synergies between companies, research centres and universities.

Additional efforts are directed to provide research and development support and experience to the public and private sector; to strengthening cooperation to improve the development activity in RTD in time, cost and quality, by cooperation with other partners; and increasing the collaboration with third organizations related to the water businesses, including the private and the public sector. The main areas of activities of the centre are the alternative water resources, as desalination and reuse; crisis management (floods and droughts) and global change; advanced water treatments; sludge management and odour control; operational cost management; and implementation efforts on the compliance of the water framework directive development.

Aigües de Barcelona, Empresa Metropolitana de Gestió del Cicle Integral de l’Aigua (AB) is a company that integrates all services related to water cycle.

This company connects 146 years of experience of Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona (SGAB), managing drinking water system, with the nearly 40 years that the metropolitan institutions providing urban drainage services and wastewater treatment. New Aigües de Barcelona is responsible of the integrated management of water resources in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, ( 2.881.141 inhabitants ).


The Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil – LNEC (National Laboratory for Civil Engineering) is a state owned research and development institution founded in 1946 and based in Lisbon, Portugal.

LNEC works in the various domains of civil engineering, giving it a unique multidisciplinary perspective in this field. LNEC’s main goals are to carry out innovative research and development and to contribute to the best practices in civil engineering. LNEC also plays a key role in advising the government in technical and scientific matters of civil engineering, as an unbiased and independent body.

LNEC’s Hydraulic and Environment Department (DHA) develops research activities applied to the field of water and environment (120 total staff/60 researchers/40 PhD). In particular, its Urban Water Division (NES) deals with water supply, wastewater and storm water services, with leading-edge research in areas such as asset management of urban water infrastructures, performance assessment and advanced treatments. Its core activity is urban system analysis, diagnosis and decision-making processes, including civil engineering hydraulics, water quality and treatment processes.

Related to water treatment processes, NES’ activity has been focused on (i) optimization studies and performance assessment of water and wastewater treatment plants (conventional treatments, full scale) and on (ii) the development, optimization and modeling of clean and energy effective advanced (or alternative) treatments for drinking water production and wastewater treatment and reclamation with special emphasis on the following technologies and target contaminants:

– Membrane pressure-driven processes (MF, UF, NF), dissolved air flotation, adsorption (PAC, GAC), biofiltration (BAC) and hybrid processes (PAC/membrane).

– Control of membrane (bio)fouling, natural organic matter, disinfection by-products, cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins, other microcontaminants, viruses and protozoa.
